Marijan and Miha Kehlar of Keltis Winery in Slovenia
18 Sep 2018
Keltis Winery, located in East Styria, Slovenia, is one of the most breathtaking wineries I have ever been to. Winding up the hill side some 360 meters above sea level through the abundant vines one finds oneself at the door to Keltis.
The story starts in 1776 where 17 Oak trees were cut down for one single reason - to build a wooden wine cellar. Today this cellar is one of the oldest and biggest on Southern Steiermark.
With welcoming smiles and grins from ear to ear we were invited in and immediately greeted with a glass of Cuveé Extreme. After the trip up and the rescue of a kitten in the farm shed, Kreso's new bestie, it what was what the doctor had ordered.
A blend of Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Traminer and Muscat Ottonel. Long maceration produces cloudy dark orange/light rose red immense juice. Simply divine. Some might say refreshing!
Immense attention to detail in the vineyard and the cellar to boot produce these wonderfully expressive wines. Marl is the main rock of the terroir which provides the wines with minerality, especially felt in the macerated wines.
A truly wonderful evening with Marijan and Miha. Smoking Cuban's, eating truffles from the Karlić family in Istria and rolling back down the hill 😜
